WHY HAVE ANOTHER LEARNING CENTER IN COSTA MESA?...Sheer numbers and lack of accessibility. Three West-Side Costa Mesa elementary schools are located close to HCF. Two of the three are poor performing schools according to the Academic Performance Index (API). Students from these schools live in the neighborhoods surrounding HCF. The sheer number of students who live within this densely populated part of Costa Mesa that need accessible, academic assistance, indicates that there is a need for more after-school learning centers. The Wilson Street Learning Center operates Monday through Friday from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. The ongoing success of our base-elementary school program (currently 52 students registered) led us to envision expanding to serve both middle and high-school students. This vision has begun to unfold with our new Teen Computer Lab and Academic Center. |

WHAT IS THE WILSON STREET LEARNING CENTER? (WSLC)The WSLC is an After-School Learning center in the city of Costa Mesa. The WSLC is operated by Harbor Christian Fellowship (HCF), an Assemblies of God Church that has been serving Costa Mesa since 1955. HCF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The WSLC provides tutoring, homework help, a daily-nutritional snack, and academic support for children in grades 1-12. HCF uses a small paid staff (currently a Center Director only) to recruit, train and mobilize volunteers from the community. Our dedicated volunteers patiently work with students one-on-one, or in small groups to help students succeed and excel academically. |
